Rehabilitation & Redevelopment
As Three Kings Quarry’s useful life draws slowly to a close, a carefully controlled and
council-consented rehabilitation programme will enable the land to be reused in the future.
While quarrying of scoria on site continues, backfilling part of the quarry pit began in April 2012 and will take a number of years.
Winstone Aggregates’ existing quarrying resource consents authorise further excavation down to sea-level. We intend to cease excavation at about 34m above sea level whilst also progressively backfilling the quarry pit.
The Three Kings controlled fill consent conditions which enable us to backfill are the most comprehensive of any similar site in New Zealand. We take our responsibilities in this area very seriously and work hard to achieve a good compliance record.
Our council resource consents cover quarrying and the rehabilitation of the site, but not its future use or redevelopment. The land itself is currently council zoned to enable quarrying and rehabilitation, and any future land use changes will require Auckland Council rezoning.
The rehabilitation of the Three Kings Quarry site is an exciting project and something very unique within the Auckland isthmus.
Winstone Aggregates a Division of Fletcher Concrete and Infrastructure Limited has engaged Fletcher Living a Division of Fletcher Construction Company Limited to manage the end use elements of the Three Kings Quarry site. Both Fletcher Concrete and Infrastructure Limited and Fletcher Construction Company Limited are Divisions of Fletcher Building Limited (the parent company).
